A guild we stand behind

Carnival Society International

Building together through joy

Pageantry & Servitude

Not a company that puts on shows. A guild that unites organisations — and its members are the artists, acrobats, artisans, clowns and hosts already inside them.

Where it came from

Eleven years of public work, then a guild

Carnival Society International was founded by Lewis Mitchell Neeff under Guerrilla Concerto, after eleven years spent making participatory work in public. The earliest Carnivals took shape with help from Meow Wolf and the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art — which tells you the level it was operating at before it had a name of its own.

It travels. It builds carnivals, installations, experiences, plays and theatrical releases out of whatever happens to be around — which is a discipline, not a shortage.

Ninety seconds of it

What it actually looks like

Shot by Lewis and by us — the pink tent at Unison in New Mexico, and the carnivals the Denver chapter builds the rest of the year. Sound on.

The part worth repeating

How they measure it

Not attendance. Not revenue. Whether a community has more creative capacity after the Carnival than it had before.

That is a hard thing to count and an easy thing to fake, and most organisations quietly choose the metric that flatters them instead. This one didn’t. As Lewis puts it: “It’s what’s inside that counts. Honk honk.”

How it works

Three rungs, and you choose how far up

Membership isn’t a price list — it’s a ladder. Stand at the bottom and watch a trade being taught, or climb until you are the one welding the thing that goes down the street.

  1. 01

    Take a single class

Pay as you go · no commitment

Turn up, learn one trade, go home. Nothing is asked of you beyond the evening. Most people start here and quietly never stop.

  2. 02

    Take all of them

    Guild dues · unlimited classes

Every trade, across every chapter. The rung where someone who came to learn one skill discovers they have accidentally acquired six.

  3. 03

    Build the thing

Guild dues+ · classes and builds

You stop taking classes about making and join the builds. This is where the floats, the costumes and the structures come from.

Where

Three chapters, and a longer plan

Each chapter teaches trades and hosts member gatherings. But they are also building toward something slower: land, water, and a permanent site held in common.

Why this page exists

We recognise the shape of it

The Caravan is one van and a few pairs of hands. Carnival Society is a room full of them. But it runs on the same arithmetic: somebody teaches somebody a trade, and a year later there is a thing in the street that nobody could have made alone.

Everything we sell was made that way too — by a person who was taught by a person. We will put our name next to anyone doing the teaching.

Written from an account given directly by Lewis Mitchell Neeff, founder, in October 2026, and from carnivalsociety.org. Classes, membership and events are handled entirely by them.
