SHIPIBO WORK · PERUVIAN AMAZON
The long applicator — one person holds it, another blows. Ours are cut from palo sangre, a dense red hardwood, carved the whole length, painted, and then wrapped in glass beads one at a time. The animal on the stem is the artist’s choice, and no two are the same.
Counting what is in hand…
THE TEPIS
Every tepi here was made by Shipibo artists in the Peruvian Amazon. The wood is cut green and dried, then the figure is carved in relief — a frog, an owl, an eagle, a trumpet flower at the mouthpiece. The beadwork that follows is the slow part: the kené patterns are laid bead by bead around the shaft, and a single piece can take days. Several of ours carry details that only show under black light.
Unwrapping the cloth…
Every piece on this page is one of one — when it is gone, it is gone. Tell us what you are looking for and we will write when the next ones land.
Some of these pieces are traditionally connected to ceremonial, artistic or ancestral practices. We buy them from the artisans who make them, we sell them as the objects they are, and we ask that they be treated with the same respect they were made with.
The Wizard Caravan does not claim to provide medical, psychological or spiritual treatment through any product sold. More in our FAQ.
WHEN THE NEXT ONES LAND
Every piece here is one of one, so the shelf changes week to week. Leave an e-mail and we will write before the next batch goes up — never more than that.
